Spectre - 8/10

It did everything a James Bond movie was supposed to do, but it didn't do anything else. It didn't go above and beyond in any way. It wasn't bad at all, but I was hoping to be blown away. It achieved exactly my expectations. No more, no less.

Skyfall was better.

The Hateful Eight - 7/10

Great movie but not Tarantino's best. The 70mm version was absolutely phenomenal though, and it was awesome seeing a movie on an old-school film projector again, with every speck of dust and line and all the other imperfections. It reminds you that you're in a theater watching a movie but at the same time isn't too distracting. I missed that.

So yeah, if there's a theater near you playing the 70mm edition you should definitely drive the extra few miles and shell out the extra cash to see it.

the raid redemption 9/10

this movie turned into a martial arts film out of nowhere when i expected a more typical action flick about cops raiding some criminals, and it turns into one of the best martial arts films ive seen

the choreography is superb, and while the story is forgettable it doesn't really matter in the midst of absolutely brutal fight scenes with a lot of super murder and ass-kickings

Batman Vs Superman 4/10

Really enjoyed watching it, though I do have a penchant for enjoying bad movies anyway.

There's no consistency in the plot, for starters. New threads are introduced and then immediately dropped in the same scene. Character motivations are fucked, everyone has at least 4 reasons as to why they are doing what they are doing, few of them very believable and many of them contradicting each other. There are times when scenes that are genuinely hilarious in terms of what's going on are framed completely seriously, as if nobody noticed ow insanely stupid what just happened was.

To demonstrate that, I'll detail what happens in a scene with the details like characters and objects omitted:
Spoiler:

That's the sort of shit you get. It's hilarious. I genuinely think this movie could have been a great dark comedy with a good recut.

There are a lot of individual scenes which are quite good, but none of them work together in the same movie. The scene from the trailers with Batman in the suit and also a coat for some reason, that whole scene is actually pretty good in the context of being a dream sequence. Spoilery details:
Spoiler:

There's a lot of stuff like that, individual scenes that could have been good in a movie in which they worked with everything else.

It also baffles me why they opened the movie with another recount of the Batman origin story. As if at this point we don't all know exactly who the fuck Batman is. If it had opened with a recount of the life of Batman, of his slow descent into the hyper-violent killer version his is in the film, as villains keep coming back again and again and people he loves die again and again, if it had opened with all that in stead it would have made the whole movie so much better.

Especially since once you kind of accept that this is a different Batman, he's actually pretty good. Especially alongside Alfred. Alfred's great here, he plays of Batman really well and is characterised brilliantly with the little of him we see.

And Wonder Woman too, she's really good when she's there, and when she isn't just doing nothing. It may take her the whole movie to get in on the action, but when she does she's fucking great. And she has a THEME TUNE. Fuck me that's rad as shit. Wonder Woman is basically where all the tiny bits of self awareness this film has are contained. And she's inserted into the story really well, unlike Batman. There's no exploratory sequence showing her backstory, we know she's fucking Wonder Woman, she's just there, being cool.

So in short, if you're the sort of person like me who loves walking out of movies and talking for ages about them with your mates you saw it with, be it about how good they are or how shit they are, you'll probably get a kick out of this movie. There's enough to enjoy in it that you won't be too bored by the end of it, and there's a fuckton to talk about when it's over. Did I mention the Martha thing? Because god you'll be talking about the Martha thing. Fuck that Martha thing. Jesus H Christ.

Worth noting: My comic nerd brother who's read all the comics this movie rips from loves it so much he refuses to believe it has flaws, so I guess there's more to enjoy if you're that sort of a nerdo.
