[maybe I'll make banner or something]

Synopsis:
So I had the stupid idea to work my way through Hulu's anime selection from A-Z and see how long it takes me to descend in to total madness. The rules for myself are as follows:

1)An anime has to be watched from beginning to end. The only time this doesn't apply is if I've already watched an entire anime, in which case it can be skipped, or it's an especially long anime (see One Piece) and I've already watched a significant portion.

2)No giving up on an anime halfway through, regardless of quality or length.

3)I must review and score each anime after I finish them. They will be posted for posterity.

With that, let us begin! Feel free to comment and discuss the currently watched anime/previously watched anime, and feel free to watch along as well.

Accel World does seem to have a pretty interesting premise. Is it all set in VR, or are there any real world shenanigans going on in it?

There's VR battles that happen, as well as real-world intrigue. There's a nice mix of the two.

Also, it's available as a sub and dub, depending on your preference.

Review: A fun sci-fi romp through a world where everyone is connected to a VR global net via "Neuro Linkers", small devices fitted across the back of a person's neck. The main character is a short, chubby social outcast and a victim of intense bullying. That is, until a girl comes along and offers him a chance to participate in the "Brain Burst", a high-stakes VR fighting game program that even has the ability to help them in the real world.

This begins a pretty excellent adventure as the main character and his friends learn the benefits and dangers of the Brain Burst program. The characters are interesting and likable, the story has action and intrigue, and the plot twists aren't obvious. The show also has truly strong female characters (whether it's obvious at first or not), which is nice to see in an anime.

I dropped the score a bit due to the ending leaving a lot of plot devices unanswered. I'm going to assume there's an upcoming second season and add this to my favorites list so that I can go back to it if/when that happens.

Review: I can barely begin to describe the ways that this anime is garbage. The story sucks, it's full of pointless nudity and sexual content, the characters are all two-dimensional, and their designs are generic as hell... the list goes on. I spent most of the show (which only has the first season available, I say as I shudder) hoping someone finally just kicks the main character's ass already. This doesn't happen, however. There is never any sense of danger, with basically every fight being some sort of blowout in the main character's favor.

Seriously, skip this shit.
Also, Hulu just added the first episode of Absolute Duo, so I'm going to watch that first and keep an eye on it while I watch Afro Samurai.

Review: I don't even know where to begin with this, except to say it's a work of art. There's a defined dissonance between styles of old feudal dress, speech and combat mixed with futuristic weaponry, biomechanical designs and modern slang and speech. Yet at the same time all of this works in harmony with great animation and an engaging story that works despite only being five episodes. At only 5 episodes (and a movie) I highly recommend watching this. I plan to watch the movie this weekend and will add to this review at the time.

Samuel L Jackson speaks maybe 20 words (optimistically) through the whole series.

Also, you need to watch it in english for the ridiculous slang. (see: Old hermit yelling to a crowd, "CAN YOU DIG IT?!")

Review: Ah! My Goddess is a romantic comedy about a down on his luck college student who, one night, accidentally calls the Goddess Helpline. Heaven sends the goddess Belldandy to give him one wish. Without thinking, he wishes for Belldandy to stay with him forever. This sets off a story about their hijinks as their relationship evolves and progresses.
The whole series starts off pretty entertaining, but unfortunately goes on too long. The episodes slowly become formulaic in design, and actual character development becomes basically nonexistent. Also, prepare to be disappointed by the ending, because their really isn't one. At least not one that is satisfying in any way.
All in all, this started out really good, but wore out it's welcome around the second season. Watch it if you like sugary romcoms, but otherwise it might not be for you.

Review: "it's ok" -IGN
But seriously, it's ok at best. It starts off with a pretty cook premise about high-powered rollerblades, and gangs that vie for territory with each other, and then devolves in to a typical battle anime where they spend more time talking during the fights than they do actually fighting. Races and people getting kicked with rollerblades is only interesting for so long.
Also of note is that it actually shows nips when female characters are topless, which is more often than it should be for an anime that mostly revolves around middle-schoolers.

Review: College dude has some chick show up at his apartment, and she tells him that they used to be engaged until he bailed on his shitty, abusive family. She still wants to marry him, though. They end up living together. This anime is hella boring, even by shitty romcom standards. The main female protagonist has almost no personality outside "I love this person always be with me" which seems to be the driving force behind literally everything she does. Worst of all, despite the series officially ending, there's no REAL ending. There's no resolution, the characters don't get married or anything.
This anime is damn-near identical to Ah! My Goddess in every aspect, minus the cool magic stuff. It even suffers from the same problem of having the second season be almost entirely pointless one-shot episodes with nearly zero character development.
Given a 3/10 because it's heavily implied that the main characters do the nasty which is about the most their relationship develops in this whole show.

Review: Country bumpkin goes to the big city in hopes of providing money for his village. Within the first 10 minutes he gets swindled and loses all of his money. That's how this anime about some poor schlub getting drafted in to a group of assassins begins, and it only gets better from there. Violence, tragedy, magical weapons, romance and humor intertwine in to a great anime that was a blast to watch from beginning to end. It constantly kept me on my toes and kept me guessing. I haven't gotten this excitable watching an anime since Gurren Lagann, if that's any indication.
I had been expecting something polarizing, by the way people talked, but I loved this anime. Almost every character was relatable as a human (minus one or two psychos), which meant I found myself sad when they would die. It's very rare for me to want to see a redemption of a villain (I like them to go out with an epic fight).
Ultimately I think if you're in to good story and some quality ultra-violence, then go watch this anime.

Huh.

I thought almost every character was pretty flat and uninteresting, and the tragic parts of the story were downright corny. Also, was pretty disappointed at how the first episode made it seem like there'd be some deeper moral conflicts like "if someone kills loads of people for a good cause, can you really call them a good person", yet there was no way I would ever question the morality of the protagonists' actions because every single person they killed was so cartoonishly evil.

The action scenes were pretty good, though. And I did enjoy the main villain team's downright slice-of-life style antics.

Review: This is about a school for people known as Exceeds; people who can manifest their soul in to a weapon. The main character is different on that instead of a weapon, he manifests a shield. I can't really go beyond that because there's a lot going on and not a whole lot of it gets explained. You can expect to see a lot of usual anime tropes: stupid female uniforms, pointless nudity and panty shots, etc. It's pretty average with an interesting premise and ok animation.
Also I'd like to point out that the image they use for the show (see above) does not even show the main character at all.

Side note, I went back and watched this because they added it in after I started this whole thing and passed that section. I also have to update the currently watching because they added an anime just before AKB0048 alphabetically.

Review: Another shitty tsundere romcom. Note again how the actual main character is not present in the artwork above. I'm pretty sure they spent the entire animation budget on the shitty hairstyles that nearly every female character in this show has. The story is pretty typical; Good-hearted idiot with a bad reputation and nickname he may or may not have earned, who lives with his sister, meets some chick only to find out that their families arranged for them to be married, so now they have to live together.
I'm giving it a 2/10 instead of a 1/10 because a) the show actually shows nip which is always surprising in regular anime, and b) the fucking Shyamalan twist ending which I'm going to spoil for you because DON'T WATCH THIS FUCKING GARBAGE. Basically at the end the dude has to choose between the girl who confessed her love to him, and him to her in return, and his fucking sister. And he chooses the sister. That's how it ends. The other chick ends up moving back in, but it's HEAVILY implied that they'll be doing the horizontal monster mash at the first available opportunity.

In short, ignore this and watch something good.

I should note that as soon as I finished this series my Hulu crashed and the PS4 app irreparably corrupted itself, requiring me to reinstall it. So take that in to consideration.

Review: An interesting premise involving a guerilla idol group playing intergalactic concerts on industrial planets with entertainment bans. Unfortunately, there starts to be too many storylines and too many characters. The character you assume is going to be the main, gets shunted off to the side pretty quickly in favor of others. There really wasn't even a decent ending.

Review: I don't even have the energy to write a full review after watching this. Soda cans that turn human do battle to determine which can material is better: aluminum or steel. At least that's what it should be, but it focuses on being a romcom more. The last 2 episodes actually have action and interesting plot (episode 13 notwithstanding because they literally just tacked on a hot springs episode at the end because fuck it, why not), so I gave it a 2/10 as opposed to a 1/10. The characters suck, the writing is awful and everything is stupid. Despite the ending being ok AT BEST, they still managed to make the writing for it suck by hamfisting a villain character in at the last minute. Don't watch this.

Review: This anime actually surprised me. Normally I have an issue when anime uses out-of-place cgi over traditionally animation, but this show actually did it pretty well. The story revolves around a war between Earth and Mars (Or Vers, as the native people call it) that breaks out after an assassination attempt on the Vertian princess. The anime has an interesting world built when it comes to pre-show interaction and history between the two civilizations, and the show does a good job of mixing intense space battles with political intrigue on the part of Vers. Overall it was a really good watch, with an actual satisfying ending which has been rare in this challenge.

Review: Technically there's 25 episodes to this, but only four on Hulu, which is extremely strange. I really enjoyed what was here, but i took a point because the main character is basically crying constantly at any given time. That being said, I'd recommend watching those four episodes because the whole thing is an absolute trip, in typical Gainax fashion.

Review: Based on the PS2 VN, the show follows each of the story arcs in 4 episode groups. Each is a standalone story of the main character with a different girl. The sequel, SS+, continues each story arc with an extra 2 episodes each. I expected a typical anime romcom, but what i got was actually really cute romance stories. None of the characters were really obnoxious, which was a nice change of pace. That being said, almost 50 episodes of standalone stories starts to wear after a while, and some of the stories weren't nearly as fun or interesting to watch. If you're in to cute and sappy romances, then this is for you.

The Ambition of Oda Nobuna
12 episodes

Review: A young man somehow gets thrown back 400 years to an alternate Sengoku period, where many of the big names of the warring states are inexplicably women. The man is a huge fan of the "Ambition of Oda Nobunaga" video game series, and thus has a pretty hefty knowledge of that time period. He uses his knowledge of the future to gain good standing with Oda Nobuna (female version of Oda Nobunaga) and help her in her quest for hegemony. This inevitably starts causing problems as he begins rewriting history, and things change that he doesn't foresee.
Ultimately it's a really good premise that's marred with a lot of typical anime trope antics (main character is a pervert, etc). These include a lot of instances of characters acting decidedly OUT of character just for the purposes of one-time or running jokes. If you like these sorts of things, you might enjoy this, otherwise you'll find yourself rolling your eyes a lot in-between interesting scenes of battle and diplomacy.
The show kind of hints at a possible second season, but who knows.

So my fiance really likes "Actually I Am..." so we're watching that together while I continue forward. Next anime is Amnesia, based off of a VN. So yay, more romance...

Review: A high school boy with a bad reputation for being a "leaky basket", in that he seems completely incapable of keeping a secret, discovers that his crush is actually a vampire. If he tells anyone, she will be forced to leave school forever. All sorts of antics ensue, etc.

If you've read my previous reviews, you'll know i'm sick to death of romantic comedies. They're basically all the same; bland female lead, lots of misunderstandings, dedicated cockblock character designed only to prevent romantic situations, so on and so forth. This, however, was actually really good. All of the characters had fun and unique personalities, there was no designated cockblock, and the situations were actually funny instead of just groan-inducing. Not once did I see a character where I was instantly saying "I don't like you; you give nothing of benefit to this show." I felt genuinely interested in what was going on and was never bored by an episode.

Give this show a chance; it's probably the best romcom I've watched so far. Unfortunately, I've heard it didn't sell well, so we'll probably never see a second season, though apparently the manga is still updating if you find yourself needing more afterwards.

Review: Dunno if I should even bother with a full review, considering the writers couldn't bother with a real ending. So basically what you have here is a romance anime based on a visual novel. There's some stuff about reality jumping, and some invisible boy helping the main girl, but who cares honestly. It's too bad then that the story is stupid, the male characters (minus Orion and Ikki) are all seriously terrible people, and the main character is an idiot who exists only to react to the situation at hand. Everything she does is straight out of the "What NOT to do in an abusive relationship" handbook. Don't watch this anime unless you plan to study it and learn exactly what abusive relationships can look like, and how not to deal with them.

Ugh, that's like 6 hours of my life I'm never getting back.

Was Amnesia based on an otome game? It seems abusive relationships are an actual thing if this and Diabolik Lovers is anything to go by.

Yeah it's based on a vn

My issue is that it doesn't ADDRESS the fact that many of the relationships were abusive or borderline, often going out of the way to make them seem romantic.

Like the second to last guy basically threatens to rape her (AFTER drugging and caging her) and the whole situation is basically glossed over. It's horrifying tbh

Review: A young man wakes up to find out that he has died, and is in the afterlife. In this afterlife, a group of troubled youths who couldn't accept the short lives they lived, rebel against someone named "Angel" as way to defy god. That's the basic premise and I can't get much more in to it beyond that, because going any further would spoil all of the twists and turns that this series has to offer. It's a great show, bittersweet to the end. This is basically great if you need a good, cathartic cry, especially towards the end. Go watch this show; 100% recommendation from me.
Lopped off a point because one of the characters is a huge dick for literally no reason and damn near ruined part of the ending sequence for me.
Also, I'M NOT CRYING YOU'RE CRYING!!

Review: A kid with a lung condition moves back to the small town where his grandparents live and transfers to the high school there. Fairly soon he learns that the class he transferred to is cursed, and as the bodies start to pile up, he has to work fast to discover if it can be stopped.
Honestly the whole thing felt like an anime version of Final Destination. Many of the students die in such bizarre and strange ways it is actually hard to take seriously. Especially during the last two episodes (the only point where the pace of the anime actually picks up), I increasingly found myself laughing every time a character got pasted in some way.
The anime has an extremely uneven pace, shifting from extremely slow plodding through the plot to suddenly having someone die. Again, it isn’t until the last two episodes that the pace actually picks up and things really start going south for everyone.
In that same vein, the ending is going to leave you wanting. It felt like nothing ACTUALLY got solved, and their meddling likely got more people killed than would have died via the curse.
Overall pretty average horror stuff. Not actually scary minus a few trippy dream sequences.

Review: The main character is a girl who often gets confused for a boy, a fact which bothers her but never quite so much as to put up more than a small fuss about it. Due to circumstances, she gets drawn in to the world of Survival Games, which is a much more exciting way of saying that she ends up playing airsoft with two older guys. These guys are professional players, and need a third person on their team. Mind you, they apparently don't allow girls on their team, so she's forced to hide this fact so that she can continue to play.
To be honest, I had trouble staying interested in this anime. It's hard to feel invested in the drama and the battles knowing that nothing is really at stake; the characters are ultimately just shooting plastic pellets at each other. Nobody dies and the worst injury someone suffers is probably some bad bruising and maybe a little broken skin. You can only dramatize airsoft fights so much.
Ultimately there's no real ending with what Hulu has. I don't know if there is a second season, but the show definitely set it up for one. I don't think I'd be particularly interested in continuing this show of my own accord anyway.

Next anime: Aquarion

Review: I’m going to be honest right off the bat; this is a hard anime to follow. Rules change, powers get created on the fly and until the end the backstory is kind of a mess. Usually here I’d put some kind of synopsis but I don’t think that’d help. That being said, it’s not a bad anime. It’s a throwback to older mecha anime (and it shows). My biggest complaints about it are the often random usage of mid-00′s 3d animation and the adventure-of-the-week setup that the show has going for it through most of the run.

The plot runs an interesting hybrid of sci-fi mecha action and magic mysticism blended in to something unique. It’d definitely say it’s worth a watch, if you can handle 00′s anime tropes and you like watching giant 3d robots fight each other.

I was going to watch Aquarion EVOL next, but apparently HULU only has season 2. (???) So instead, I’ll be watching Argevollen next. Or I could do a wildcard and pick a different anime at random.
